The Horton Family

Last week was busy to say the least - preparing for Erie's Summer Festival of the Arts, settling matters with a web client, and drawing caricatures. In the midst of this I agreed to draw a family. No big deal, right? How hard is that? Right...Try 15 family members, candid photos to work from, and two days to complete it. My office quickly moved from upstairs to the living room. If I was going to be indoors, I was going to do it in style!

The family tree was drawn on paper with pen, scanned, and colored in Photoshop. I'm pleased with the results, but what matters most is the Hortons LOVED it.

These kind of jobs are certainly worth it. It's always rewarding to see the joy in people receiving a caricature. It's a pleasant reminder of why I do what I do.

Say Cheeeze and Win Priiizes!

Erie Summer Festival of the Arts is June 26-28. I will be drawing at this event all weekend! On Sunday, at 2:30PM, professional photographer, Amanda Kifer, will be with us to take some caricature-action-shots of me drawing and those watching in the crowd, so I need you, everyone you know, everyone you want to know, and your mom, and their moms to come out!

And this is not just any photo shoot. I will be GIVING AWAY PRIZES to those who participate! You could win...

a free caricature of yourself,
2 Splash Lagoon all-day passes,
or a two-hour caricature party!

The prize give-away will be directly following the photo shoot. Note: Prizes are only eligible to those present between 2:30PM-3:30PM and have officially submitted their name to my lovely wife and assistant, Bryce. The order of the guests having their caricatures drawn will be determined on a first-come, first-serve basis during the photo shoot. Only the prizes will be given away, so the standard rates still apply to the caricatures. Come out to show your support and give a doodle a chance!

The Festival of the Arts is being held at the Pepsi Amphitheater, on the lakeside of the Bayfront Highway. For an event schedule visit: http://www.eriesummerfestivalofthearts.org/schedule.htm

The Face Interpreter

Over the weekend I drew caricatures at a wedding reception. I met some great people with fun personalities, enthusiastic smiles, and one in particular with a nice set of "doodleful" eyebrows. Everyone seemed to love my "uncanny interpretations" as one person put it. Hmm...I never thought of myself as an interpreter. Maybe my new job description should read "face interpreter".

Here is a caricature I did for the bride & groom. It is sitting out at the entrance way to greet those arriving at the reception.

"When Hell Freezes Over" The story is, Barb and Brent never thought these would get together until Hell freezes over. Well it did...(at least in this picture).

Brodie's Birthday Bash!

Birthday parties are a blast (hence, the post's title)! Here is some of my thoughts.

Picture One: My personal favorite. These folks are great sports!

Picture Two: I'm not sure why I gave this guy a monk cut. Sometimes I draw so fast I don't realize what I'm doing!

Picture Three: I really enjoyed drawing this Mother & son. They have a great relationship - lots of teasing and jokes from these two! It's always easier to draw when your subjects are having fun.

Picture Four: I didn't get a genuine smile out of her until the very end of the drawing. It's a downer because it's a really unique feature of her!

Picture Five: Last but certainly not least...Birthday Boy Brodie bustin' a move!
